Student-Centered Coaching is an evidence-based instructional coaching model that shifts the focus from ‘fixing’ teachers to collaborating with them to increase student outcomes. Taking a data-driven approach increases the efficacy of teachers, coaches, and most importantly our students. To get there, we must not only create a culture for coaching, but we must also establish clarity around the principal and coach partnership.
This session is one of a multi-session learning opportunity. The scope and sequence of the series is designed such that Sessions 1, 2 and 3 support coaches in getting started and begin applying coaching practices. While sessions 4, 5, and 6 support coaches in refining their structure and process and exploring ways to measure impact of coaching. For learning outcomes specific to this session, please see below.
Within this session, participants will have opportunities to practice new skills, reflect on current practices and plan for application within their own settings, while collaborating with other participants.
Outcomes for sessions 1, 2, 3:
- Discuss the core practices for Student-Centered Coaching
- Understand the power and process of coaching cycles
- Identify and plan for opportunities to apply coaching cycles within your setting
- Learn how to set goals and develop success criteria for coaching cycles
- Consider how to use student evidence to guide goal-setting conversations
- Learn how to use student evidence to co-plan
- Develop understanding of co-teaching moves and how to use them in the classroom
Outcomes for sessions 4, 5, 6:
- ***Please note that a prerequisite for these sessions is having had an introduction to or prior knowledge of Student-Centered Coaching (e.g., Session 1: Introduction to Student-Centered Coaching).
- Deepen understanding of how to use student evidence to support planning and reflection
- Learn the process for giving Strengths-Based Feedback
- Practice giving Strengths-Based Feedback
- Define how the roles of principal and coach work together
- Learn effective practices for principal and coach meetings
- Learn strategies to measure and communicate the impact of coaching on teaching and learning within a building or district
- Explore tools for documenting coaching cycles, including the Results-Based Coaching Tool
Who Should Attend: The training content is meant for all pre-k through high school staff with the title of "coach," including novice and experienced coaches interested in reflecting on and honing their coaching craft. Coaches may have a general coaching focus or a specific content focus (e.g., SEL, instructional, technology) and are also released to coach at least 50% of the time. In addition, supervisors of coaches are also welcome to learn about and support the practice of coaching within their building/district.
Satisfactory completion requirements:
- Attendance is based on your signature in and out of the session. Failure to provide a signature in and out will result in no credit. Attendance is taken via completion of a Form using a hyperlink or QR code.
- Participants are expected to attend the entire session to earn credit.
- Participants are expected to attend all sessions in their entirety to earn credit.
- Participants must complete an electronic course evaluation within two weeks of the session date to be sent a certificate.

Cost Information: Participation fees are waived for TrueNorth employees, TrueNorth member district employees, and parents of students in our TrueNorth member districts. For individual participants who do not meet the above criteria, this course participation fee is $300.00. Participation or material fees will be billed directly to the school district that employs the participant after the session is complete or the first session in a series is complete. Individuals are asked to not bring payment to the session.
Cancellation and Refund Information: There is no cancellation fee, though we ask for advance notice to open the spot for another person. TrueNorth reserves the right to cancel any session due to low enrollment. TrueNorth does not charge prior to the start of the offered session. If an individual attends the first day of a learning series but is unable to attend the remaining sessions, the school district that employs the participant is able to designate an alternate person. It is up to the individual no longer attending the program to give their replacement the information learned in the first session.
About the Presenters: Amber Birch Trujillo, Student Centered Coaching Trainer Amber Birch Trujillo began her educational journey as a dual-language teacher in New York City, an experience that cemented her passion for working with linguistically and culturally diverse learners. After working in both U.S. public and charter schools, Amber moved abroad and worked first as a teacher, then as a learning coach at the International School Nido de Aguilas.
Amber has an M.A. in Bilingual and Bicultural Education from New York Teachers’ College, holds certification in Student-Centered Coaching from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals’ Training Center. She is currently a Student-Centered Coaching consultant, working alongside educators in public, independent and international schools. She is also an adjunct professor at Lake Forest College where she teaches courses in ESL and Bilingual Education.
