In this class we will discuss the different stages of emotional escalation of students, and ways to identify each stage, as well as de-escalation strategies for various stages of emotional escalation. This training will focus on prevention while providing participants with techniques to help diffuse student crisis. We will also discuss how staff responses can affect student behavior, and in the moment strategies.
Outcomes: Participants will:
- Understand and identify the various stages of emotional escalation.
- Be able to identify and implement strategies for the various stages of emotional escalation.
- Learn effective communication strategies for heightened individuals.
Who Should Attend: The material is geared towards all educators (teaching assistants, teachers, SLP's, etc...) from K-12, and post high school aged classrooms.
Satisfactory completion requirements:
- Attendance is based on your signature in and out of the session. Failure to provide a signature in and out will result in no credit. Virtual attendance is taken via the Zoom Chat.
- Participants are expected to attend the entire session to earn credit.
- Participants must complete an electronic course evaluation within two weeks of the session date to be sent a certificate.

Cost Information: Participation fees are waived for TrueNorth employees, TrueNorth member district employees, and parents of students in our TrueNorth member districts. For individual participants who do not meet the above criteria, this course participation fee is $75. Participation or material fees will be billed directly to the school district that employs the participant after the session is complete or the first session in a series is complete. Individuals are asked to not bring payment to the session.
Cancellation and Refund Information: There is no cancellation fee, though we ask for advance notice to open the spot for another person. TrueNorth reserves the right to cancel any session due to low enrollment. TrueNorth does not charge prior to the start of the offered session. If an individual attends the first day of a learning series but is unable to attend the remaining sessions, the school district that employs the participant is able to designate an alternate person. It is up to the individual no longer attending the program to give their replacement the information learned in the first session.
About the Presenters: Kelli Hunt serves as both a District Services Coach and the NCI (CPI) Implementation Coach for the TrueNorth Educational Cooperative 804. She has been in the district for and served in different roles in the district for over 20 years. Within her roles she supports staff and students around behavior management in both the classroom and through professional development. She is Meritorious Instructor through CPI and provides crisis management workshops and offers follow up support with the classroom.

Sheena Watterson serves as a Learning Coordinator for the TrueNorth Educational Cooperative 804 as well as a Certified Instructor for CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Trainings. She has worked in special education for more than 15 years, previously as a Teacher and District Coach. Her areas of interest include: social-emotional learning, positive behavior supports, and post-secondary transition planning. She provides professional development trainings on the topics of classroom management, de-escalation and crisis management, and positive behavior supports and interventions. Mrs. Watterson has presented at local, state, and national conferences.
